AVP News and Letters

Periodically, Omaha AVP issues e-newsletters to share happenings, great stories and invites to upcoming events.  Check them out below.

Please read letters written from the heart by people who've been touched by their AVP opportunities. Transforming Power is both a personal and a share journey.  It strengthens and comforts us and those we share it with.

AVP FAMILY QUILT  On April 5, 2025, several members of the Omaha AVP attended the spring Omaha Modern Quilt Guild’s Spring Exhibition at the Tri-Faith Initiative Commons.

The exquisite quilts we saw delighted and inspired us to make a quilt of our own. Paper squares were created by members of our Omaha AVP family. Our theme was something about AVP and/or the square creator. Collectively they were created by AVP members currently incarcerated in Community Correction Center - Omaha (CCCO), formerly incarcerated living in communities, and AVP community volunteers and facilitators.  Additionally, two squares were made to commemorate and honor Merry Marian and Marvelous Maureen, previous Omaha AVP leaders from 1995 – 2020.   See squares

Our beautiful, love-filled quilt was on display at the AVP 50th Anniversary Gathering in Purchase NY in May 2025.  In September 2025, the Omaha AVP Family Quilt will also be on display at the 2025 Art from the Inside exhibit at G. Dobos Studios, Mission Arts Building, Lincoln, NE.  Opening reception will be on Friday evening, Sept 5.

ZINE PROJECT  Fall 2024 offered a unique, new  collaboration between University Nebraska of Omaha, the First Unitarian Church and Omaha AVP, Current/formerly incarcerated AVP contributors and University of Nebraska at Omaha freshmen enrolled in the Incarceration and Punishment English class gathered in groups of 4 to create zines, digital story books.  AVPers told their stories and the students created the zines.  Groups had 4 hours to get to know one another, find a common story theme and craft the basic story line.  Students had another week to create/complete the zines and submit them to instructor, Dustin Pendley, for class credit.  That's two weeks from start to finish!  The seven unique and compelling zines created are presented below.

During the month of September, the seven zines will be on display at the 2025 Art from the Inside exhibit at G. Dobos Studios, Mission Arts Building, Lincoln, NE.  Opening reception will be on Friday evening, Sept 5.
